Design:
This beautiful engraving captures the essence of the lunar cycle from the time when it was first understood, showing the phases of the moon as it waxes and wanes across the night sky. The image is a harmonious blend of inky blues and greens, adding a much-loved colour combination to the celestial theme. Modern-day photographs of the full and crescent moon are incorporated into the design, adding a contemporary touch to the historic engraving. These photographs, set among soft clouds, enhance the visual appeal and provide a silvery contrast to the dark night sky.
Cellarius’ chart magnificently details the phases of the moon, offering an accurate depiction based on modern understanding. This new explanation revolutionized how the cosmos was perceived, moving away from the Earth-centred view to one where celestial bodies moved in more complex orbits. This fusion of traditional artistry and modern photography creates a piece that is both informative and delightful, and which stands as a testament to the enduring wonder of the cosmos.

Narrative behind the art:
This beautiful engraving shows the phases of the moon. It illustrates the lunar cycle, as it waxes and wanes across the night sky.
The original engraved plate describes the phases of the moon as we now understand them, and was drafted by Andreas Cellarius. (Previously the Ptolomeic explanation for the phases of the moon had dominated Astronomical theory prior to the 17th century – which shows the sun, moon, and the stars orbiting around the earth.) Cellarius’ new explanation for the phases of the moon is shown here in this magnificent chart.
